Interview with a Senior

We recently sat down with Mia Daniels, a senior Biology/Pre-Dental major from Statesville, N.C., and asked her to reflect on her time at GWU as she prepares for her final semester.

What were you looking for in a University?

A good Biology program was really important. I knew I didn’t want to be in a giant lecture hall with a hundred other people. I intend to go to dental school, so I knew that building relationships with my professors would help me when I got to the application process. Also, being able to drive as a first year and have a car on campus was important. I wanted to have the freedom to go wherever or do whatever without having to rely on other people for rides – it made me feel like more of an “adult”!

What do you love about GWU?

Mia, second from left, and friends at Skate Night.

The opportunities I’ve had here. I’m the manager of the Women’s Basketball team. Getting to travel with them and being around them – they’ve become my second family here. I got involved with that my Freshman year because I was looking for a work-study position, and that was one of the options. I thought it sounded fun, and I am so glad that I chose it!

Also, I love the friendships that I’ve built. At a larger university, I can imagine that it would be hard to find a group of people that you immediately connect with. As soon as I got here, I found my crew, and we’ve stayed very close since then.

What do you do in your free time?

I watch Netflix, hang out with my friends, and try to make time to travel – whether it’s going on a roadtrip with my friends to a new city, or going to our favorite places in Charlotte, that has been really fun.

What is a typical weekend like for you?

If there’s an event going on with Student Activities, I am probably going to that. My friends and I get together to do movie nights or game nights. A bunch of us will go out to eat in town and just hang out. I like to have time to relax when the week is over.

What are you involved in on campus?

Mia, left, and friends from the Pre-Health Society.

I am the manager of the Women’s Basketball team, I’m a member of Tri-Beta, the Biology Honors Society, and I work in the Admissions Office as a Student Recruitment Ambassador. I’m also a member of the Pre-Health Society, which is a student organization that prepares you for jobs in health-related fields. We go on campus tours to visit prospective schools, work with upperclassmen to figure out 4-year plans and course schedules, and get together to talk about our career goals and interests.

What is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus is a tie between my room, and Chic-Fil-A. I live in an Apartment on campus, so I’m able to study a lot in my room. Chic-Fil-A is my favorite food, so you can find me there most days eating lunch!

What is your favorite place in town?

KIND Coffee Shop – it’s a great place to study and they also have great snacks. I’m a big fan of their smoothies. It’s just a relaxing place to go that’s not too far off campus. I also love eating at El Acapulco. I wasn’t a huge fan of Mexican food when I got here, but now I eat there every week.

Tell us your favorite Gardner-Webb memory.

When I first started working with the basketball team, we won a game against Chapel Hill. It was so cool to experience such a big win with them for the first time. When we got back to campus, students were waiting outside, holding signs and cheering for us. That energy and excitement lasted for days afterward!
